Complete Guide to Vaishno Devi Yatra: Route, Registration & Darshan Tips
The holy pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, perched at 5,200 feet in the fold of the three-peaked Trikuta Mountain in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the most revered and spiritually potent journeys in Hinduism. Every year, millions of devotees chant "Jai Mata Di" as they walk the sacred path.
1. RFID Yatra Access Card (Mandatory Registration)
Before commencing the yatra, every single pilgrim must obtain an official RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Yatra Access Card issued by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB).
- Registration is 100% free of cost.
- Physical registration counters are operational 24/7 at Katra Railway Station, Katra Bus Stand, and the Spiritual Growth Centre.
- Pilgrims must show a valid original government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter Card, Passport) for each person.
- The card must be worn around the neck and is scanned at automatic turnstiles at Banganga, Tarakote, and Bhawan.
2. Two Trekking Routes from Katra to Bhawan
Pilgrims have the choice of two routes to reach Bhawan from Katra:
A. Traditional Banganga Route (approx. 12 km)
This is the heritage route passing through Ban Ganga, Charan Paduka (where Mataβs footprints are imprinted), Ardhkuwari (Garbhjoon Cave), Sanjichhat, and then onward to Bhawan. This route has numerous eateries, refreshment kiosks, medical aid centers, and pony/palki movement.
B. Tarakote Marg (New Alternative Route, approx. 13.5 km)
Inaugurated for pedestrian comfort, Tarakote Marg starts 1 km before Banganga and joins the old track near Ardhkuwari. It features a gentler slope, anti-slip tiles, covered shelters with automatic water misting coolers, scenic viewpoints, and strict prohibition of horses/ponies, making it peaceful and quiet for walking and battery cars.
3. Key Sacred Stations Along the Path
- Ban Ganga: Mata Rani shot an arrow (Ban) into the ground to create a crystal-clear spring to quench the thirst of Veer Langoor. Pilgrims take a holy purification bath here.
- Charan Paduka (3,380 ft): The spot where the Goddess stopped and glanced back towards Bhairon Nath, leaving her divine footprint on a rock slab.
- Ardhkuwari (4,800 ft): The holy halfway point. Mata Rani hid inside the subterranean Garbhjoon cave for 9 months in deep meditation. Entering through one end of this narrow cave and exiting through the other is believed to free souls from rebirth cycles.
- Sanjichhat (6,200 ft): The highest plateau on the main trekking path, offering commanding aerial views of Katra town. The helipad and major hospital are located here.
- Holy Bhawan (5,200 ft): The sacred sanctum. Devotees deposit bags, mobile phones, and footwear in electronic lockers, take a holy bath, and proceed for darshan of the natural rock Pindies: Maha Kali (right), Maha Lakshmi (center), and Maha Saraswati (left).
- Bhairon Baba Temple (6,619 ft): Located 1.5 km above Bhawan. Devotees take the 3-minute passenger ropeway cable car. According to divine belief, darshan is complete only after seeking Bhairon Baba's blessings.
