Things to Carry for Vaishno Devi Yatra: The Ultimate Packing Guide

By Katra Pilgrim Support Desk • Updated 2026 • 5 min read

Walking a 12-kilometer mountain trail requires thoughtful preparation. Packing too much creates unnecessary burden, while forgetting vital essentials like proper footwear or government IDs can disrupt your sacred trip. Here is our curated checklist for an effortless yatra.

1. Essential Documents

  • Original Government Photo ID: Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, or Driving License. Mandatory for RFID registration and helicopter boarding.
  • RFID Yatra Access Card: Collected at Katra before crossing Banganga; wear it around your neck at all times.
  • Hotel & Package Vouchers: Digital copy on your smartphone plus one printed copy.
  • Physical Cash: Small denomination rupee notes (โ‚น10, โ‚น20, โ‚น50, โ‚น100) for offerings, refreshments, and pony/palki tips. (UPI and ATMs are available along the route, but mobile network signals can fluctuate).

2. Footwear & Clothing

  • Sports Walking Shoes: High-grip running shoes or trekking shoes with cushioned soles. Never trek in new, un-broken shoes or stiff formal shoes.
  • Extra Cotton Socks: Carry at least 2 pairs of dry cotton socks in your daypack.
  • Summer (April to September): Light, breathable cotton garments, a light cardigan or shawl for cool evenings at Bhawan, and sunglasses.
  • Winter (October to March): Thermal innerwear, fleece jacket, heavy down coat/windcheater, woolen gloves, mufflers, and ear-covering beanies.
  • Rain Gear (July to September): Lightweight raincoat or disposable rain poncho and waterproof phone pouch.

3. First-Aid & Medical Supplies

  • Pain relief spray (Volini/Moov) or ointment for calf and knee soreness.
  • Crepe bandages and blister band-aids.
  • Digestive tablets, motion sickness pills (for the winding highway drive), and pain relievers (Paracetamol).
  • Any personal regular prescription medications for BP, diabetes, or asthma.

4. Daypack & Locker Facilities at Bhawan

Leave your heavy suitcases safely in the cloakroom of your Katra hotel. Carry only a small, lightweight backpack (under 3 kg) containing water, light snacks, ID, and a small towel for the bath at Bhawan.

At Bhawan, electronic lockers managed by SMVDSB are available to deposit your daypack, mobile phones, leather belts, and footwear before entering the sanctum sanctorum.
